Liturgical reception in cathedral for Soviet Church delegation, 1989

Events in eastern Europe seem at present to happen with such rapidity that one can scarcely keep abreast of them. It took ten years to change Poland, but only ten months East Germany and ten days for Czechoslovakia! At the time of writing the fate of poor Romania is being bloodily fought out. But in each instance the Christian Churches have been to the forefront in proving the old adage that "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church". Decades of atheistic ridicule and even persecution have been shown to have failed lamentably. Deep in the heart of the people the Christian Faith has smouldered ready to burst alight at the right.
